Erfurt (dpa / th) - According to current figures, fewer people died in Thuringia in March than in previous years.

The number of deaths fell in the third month of this year by three percent compared to the same month between 2017 and 2020, as the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday.

However, it should be taken into account that mortality was increased in 2017 and 2018 due to flu waves, said a spokesman for the state office.

However, 121 more deaths (plus 7.4 percent) were reported in the age group of people 80 years and over than in previous years.

A total of 1,638 people who were 80 years of age or older died.

In February, the death toll among people over 80 was 17 percent higher than the monthly figure in previous years.

The authority did not provide any information on the causes of death.

In contrast, statisticians recorded significantly fewer deaths in the age groups under 80.

Among the 65 to under

80 year olds, the number fell by 17.4 percent, among the under 65 year olds by 14.9 percent.
