Aachen / Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - According to medical experts, the situation in intensive care units in Germany is still particularly tense.

"The pressure is immense," said the President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI), Professor Gernot Marx, on Tuesday in a video on the current situation.

Marx, who is also director of the Clinic for Operative Intensive Care Medicine and Intermediate Care at the University Hospital Aachen, named the number of almost 5,000 Covid-19 patients nationwide.

The new patients to be admitted to the hospitals are now often very young patients in their 30s and 40s, in contrast to the first and second wave.

With the University Clinic Düsseldorf, another large medical center announced the effects of the increasing corona numbers on clinic operations on Tuesday. With initial restrictions on predictable treatments, the existing staff should also be able to be deployed more flexibly in the intensive care units. Specifically, five of the 28 operating theaters will no longer be used for the time being. In addition, fewer beds could be occupied. If treatment appointments should be postponed, the clinics contacted those affected, said a spokesman. Only a good four weeks earlier had the University Hospital Düsseldorf returned to normal operations after the necessary restrictions during the second wave of the corona pandemic.

According to data from the state government, 3875 Covid 19 patients are being treated in the hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia as of Tuesday.

That is 288 more than as of Monday.

The highest level in the pandemic so far was at the end of December with a good 6,000 Covid-19 patients in hospitals.

More than 1000 of the currently almost 3900 patients have to be cared for in the intensive care units (1033 after 1001 on Monday).

The highest level in the pandemic to date was 1165 intensive care patients nationwide at the end of December.

In Cologne, the previous high was exceeded a good week ago.

The number of free intensive care beds with ventilation technology rose nationwide to 525 (510) on Tuesday.

In the past week, this number was at times below the 500 mark.
