Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg's CDU parliamentary group leader Jan Redmann considers party chairman Armin Laschet to be the right choice as a candidate for Union chancellor from an East German perspective.

"I supported Armin Laschet out of deep conviction that I believe that he is the better candidate for chancellor also for East Germany," said Redmann on Tuesday in Potsdam.

As Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Laschet has a deep understanding of the challenges of structural change. CDU country chief Michael Stübgen also supports Laschet. In the CDU Brandenburg, however, there was also praise for the CSU chairman and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, who had cleared the way for Laschet's candidacy for chancellor.

The ten CDU direct candidates from Brandenburg for the federal election even thanked Söder: “(...) Markus Söder also has many supporters in Brandenburg and some members are certainly disappointed.

Nevertheless, it is good that this question was decided today and that there is now finally clarity, ”said a message from the CDU Brandenburg on Tuesday.

"We would therefore like to thank Markus Söder, not only for his willingness to stand up for the Union, but especially for his commitment to support Armin Laschet and all direct candidates of the Union in this difficult election campaign."

The CDU member of the Bundestag, Saskia Ludwig, also emphasized that Laschet had once again proven over the past eight days that “he is made of the hard stuff that the Chancellor is made of”.

Redmann said with a view to the currently poor poll numbers for Laschet, the race usually changes in the course of the election campaign. "I am therefore quite optimistic that the Union with Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor will cross the finish line as the winner." The quality of the Union will now show: "If the decision for one of the two has been made, will we be able to gather behind this top candidate, even if one might have had another favorite before?"

In a special digital meeting of the CDU federal executive board on Tuesday night, 31 out of 46 voting board members pleaded for party leader Laschet as candidate for chancellor in a secret ballot.

Only 9 members voted for Söder, 6 abstained.

CSU boss Markus Söder accepted the clear board vote of the CDU for Laschet.

In the CDU parliamentary group in Brandenburg, the decision for Laschet "met with unanimous approval," Redmann reported.

According to SPD parliamentary group leader Erik Stohn, Laschet is injured in the internal duel.

"I look really with concern at the Union, which is completely crushing itself here and also really tearing the ground away from under the feet of its possible candidate," said Stohn.

AfD parliamentary group leader Hans-Christoph Berndt does not see the CDU as the central political adversary.

“The poles are green and blue: Greens and AfD.

The main political opponent we are dealing with are the Greens, ”he said.

"These are actually the ones we are dealing with because we are contrary."
