Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Despite the Corona crisis, significantly more apartments were approved in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2020 than a year earlier.

Overall, the building authorities in the most populous federal state gave the green light for 61,849 apartments, as the State Statistical Office announced in Düsseldorf on Tuesday.

That was 4,596 or 8 percent more than in 2019.

The number of permits rose the most in newly constructed residential buildings with three or more apartments.

It rose by 10.4 percent to 34,609. In two-family houses, the number of permits rose by 8.5 percent to 3884 apartments.

In contrast, the number of approved apartments in single-family houses fell by 3.8 percent to 12,996.

A further 2405 apartments are to be created through the construction of dormitories (+127.1 percent).

A further 7,122 apartments (+4.6 percent) are to be built by converting or expanding existing buildings.

A further 833 apartments (−12.2 percent) were planned in mixed-use buildings that are mainly not used for residential purposes.
