Erfurt / Berlin (dpa) - Thuringia's CDU state chief Christian Hirte has rated the vote of the CDU leadership for Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor as a “decision against the CDU base”.

The mood in Thuringia as well as in several other regional associations is clear for CSU boss Markus Söder as candidate for chancellor, said Hirte on Tuesday the German press agency in Erfurt.

But he is assuming that Söder will support a candidate for Chancellor Laschet in the federal election campaign.

"We are now well advised to gather behind Armin Laschet and concentrate on the content."

In the coming months, it will be a question of whether the Union or the Greens will provide Chancellor or Chancellor, said Hirte.

Hirte does not expect a big tailwind for the Thuringian state election, which is planned to coincide with the federal election on September 26th, from the executive board's personnel decision.

"The requests to speak from the district chairmen in Thuringia speak a clear language."

15 and thus the large majority have spoken out in favor of Söder as candidate for Union Chancellor.

In a special digital meeting of the CDU leadership on Monday evening, according to a CDU spokesman, 46 board members who were entitled to vote had secretly voted 31 for Laschet's candidacy.

9 voted for Söder, 6 abstained.
