Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - Due to the corona, the state synod of the Evangelical Church in Baden will meet for the first time on Tuesday due to the corona - in accordance with the pandemic, at a digital conference. At the beginning, the members expect the “Report on the Situation” from Regional Bishop Jochen Cornelius-Bundschuh (9:30 am). He has already announced that he wants to encourage courage - even if the church is in a difficult phase with a loss of importance and declining membership. "We have something to say and we want to boldly pass on our message," said Cornelius-Bundschuh in advance.

Alongside the regional bishop, the regional church council and the evangelical upper church council, the regional synod is one of the four regional church governing bodies.

Representatives from the regions are elected to the so-called church parliament, but members are also specifically appointed.

With 73 synodals it has shrunk somewhat.

More than 60 percent are new, including four youth synodals under the age of 27 for the first time.

Because of the corona pandemic, the legislative period of the previous synod had been extended by half a year, so that the newly composed committee will now meet for the first time until Thursday.

Among other things, it elects the presidium and the bishop's election commission, which is to determine the successor of Cornelius-Bundschuh.

The bishop intends to retire in April 2022, when he will be almost 65 years old.
