A man in his twenties was sentenced on Monday by the Marseille Criminal Court to five years in prison after refusing a police check, the prosecution said in a press release.

At the time of the facts, on April 19, in the 16th arrondissement of Marseille, the defendant was driving at high speed, without a license and under the influence of narcotics, specifies the prosecution.

Car chase

"He refused a police check and engaged in a chase during which he forced a roadblock by rushing on a policeman from the Bac, narrowly missing to hit him, writes the prosecutor of the Republic of Marseille, Dominique Laurens.

At the hearing, the prosecutor recalled that if justice had to be demanding of the police, it had to be just as demanding to protect those who carry out their mission at the risk of their lives.

"

This conviction comes just days after a man in his twenties was seriously injured in the head by shots fired by a police officer during a chase, in the northern districts of Marseille.
