Birmingham (dpa) - The British retail giant Tesco has been sentenced to a million fine for selling food that has expired.
The chain has to pay 7.5 million pounds (8.7 million euros), as a court in Birmingham ruled.
The company had admitted the allegations.
There are a total of 22 cases from three different branches in the central English city in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Inspectors had discovered after information from customers, among other things, pizza, potato salad and quiche, some of which had expired by more than two weeks.
In a shop grapes were found that already showed signs of mold, it said in a message from the city of Birmingham.

"This case is a warning to all retailers to make sure their inventory is up to date and that we take action if they are found to be in breach of these regulations," said Mark Croxford of the City of Birmingham.
Tesco will also have to pay nearly £ 100,000 in court costs.
The group apologized.
"We took immediate action to correct the error and want to assure our customers that we have all means to ensure that this does not happen again," said a company spokesman.
