Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) - Church resignations are increasing, the financial situation is becoming more difficult: Several churches in Hesse have been converted or even had to be demolished in recent years.

In the Diocese of Limburg there have been 56 profanations since the turn of the millennium, in the Diocese of Fulda there were 19. Profanation is the desecration of a church before it is abandoned.

For example, a Wiesbaden church was sold to the local section of the Alpine Club, a primary school in Fulda is soon to use the premises of a church and a care facility is planned on the site of a sacred building in Bad Hersfeld.

A total of twelve churches and chapels were demolished in the Limburg diocese, in seven cases the construction of a new church is planned.

In Frankfurt, too, the planned demolition of the St. Christophorus Church in the Preungesheim district is currently being discussed, including a Catholic day-care center and a prayer room.

At the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau, five churches were converted into other church buildings, for example the Bible Museum is now located in a Frankfurt church.
