THE ESSENTIAL

  • Derek Chauvin's trial verdict to be announced between 10:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. (Paris time)

  • The jury has less than 24 hours to deliberate.

  • In the event of a conviction for the "unintentional 2nd degree murder" of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin risks in theory between 10 and 15 years in prison but the prosecutors could ask for a heavier sentence.

10:35 p.m .: A point on the jury

It is a jury under the sign of diversity, with 6 jurors out of 12 who are African-American or Métis.

A verdict must be taken unanimously, which often complicates the deliberations.

10:25 p.m.: To understand everything that Chauvin risks

Minnesota law is complicated, but to put it simply, for unintentional 2nd degree murder, for someone with no previous criminal record, Minnesota operates on a grid, and it's between 10 and 15 years.

But prosecutors have already said they will seek a heavier sentence if convicted.

They will have to convince the judge that there are aggravating circumstances.

Chauvin trial: there is a lot of confusion about what he risks

- 2nd degree murder = 40 years max

- 3rd degree = 25 years max

But he was charged with a subcategory: unintentional 2nd degree murder , which is almost identical to a 3rd degree murder and punished the same (thread 1/5)

10:15 p.m .: The imminent verdict

It is 3:15 p.m. in Minneapolis, and the verdict must be read in court between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Reminder: it is only on the guilt on the 3 charges (murders in the 2nd and 3rd degree and manslaughter).

In the event of a "guilty" verdict, the judge will determine a sentence later (probably not before one or two months).

It therefore took less than a day of deliberation. At the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer on trial for the murder of George Floyd, the 12 jurors agreed on a verdict on Tuesday, which must be announced in court between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. (between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., Paris time). While Minneapolis is under tension after the death of Daunte Wright, Joe Biden said Tuesday “pray for the right verdict”, considering that the evidence against Derek Chauvin was “overwhelming”.

Derek Chauvin has been charged with three charges: 2nd degree murder, 3rd degree murder and manslaughter.

The jury will render three verdicts.

In the event of guilt, Judge Cahill will subsequently decide - probably not for several weeks - on a conviction.

In theory, the maximum for second degree murder is 40 years' imprisonment, but Derek Chauvin has been charged with the "unintentional" variant.

Because of his lack of history, he normally faces between 10 and 15 years in prison, according to the Minnesota sentencing schedule, but prosecutors could seek a heavier sentence.
