After the vote of the CDU board for Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor, it must be shown this Tuesday whether the power struggle in the Union is actually over.

On Tuesday morning, after more than six hours of deliberations, the CDU's governing body stood by a clear majority behind Laschet's candidacy.

In the special digital meeting, 31 out of 46 voting board members voted in a secret ballot for the CDU chairman.

9 voted for CSU boss Markus Söder, 6 abstained.

According to the CDU, this corresponds to an approval of 77.5 percent for Laschet and 22.5 percent for Söder.

The nerve-wracking power struggle for the top post for the federal election in September is now likely to be decided because the CSU had previously placed this question in the hands of the CDU.

The CDU is now making this “sovereign” decision, said CSU chairman Markus Söder on Monday in Munich.

"We as the CSU and I also respect every decision."

But whether this also applies to the Union faction in the Bundestag and the Laschet critics at the CDU base remains to be seen.

The afternoon session of the members of the Bundestag from the CDU and CSU should bring clarity.

A week ago, the majority of those in favor of Söder's candidacy spoke up.
