Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin Senate is discussing today (Pk 1300) on its further course of action after the end of the rent cover before the Federal Constitutional Court.

Last but not least, it should be about help for those tenants who live in apartments with a capped rent and are now unable to make arrears due rent payments because they lack the money.

A hardship fund is under discussion, which could amount to a double-digit million sum.

The urban development administration assumes that around 40,000 tenants in Berlin could need financial support.

With the rent cap, the rents for 1.5 million apartments were frozen on February 23, 2020 at the level of June 2019.

When changing tenants, the landlord had to adhere to the old rent or state-set upper limits.

Rents that are more than 20 percent above the upper limit have had to be reduced since November 23, 2020.

However, the Federal Constitutional Court declared the cover null and void in a decision announced last Thursday because the federal government was responsible for tenancy law.
