Würzburg (dpa / lby) - The Würzburger Kickers are close to crashing out of the 2nd Bundesliga.

The newcomer from Lower Franconia experienced the next bitter evening despite huge chances in the second half at 1: 3 (0: 1) on Tuesday against SV Darmstadt 98.

Four game days before the end of the season, the bottom light from Würzburg is ten points behind Eintracht Braunschweig in 15th place and can be relegated this Friday at Karlsruher SC.

"Extremely bitter" was that, said sports director Sebastian Schuppan on the TV channel Sky. "We were too naive in the crucial situations." His team had "not had the killer instinct" in the attack. The result is therefore “very, very bitter”. Despite the precarious situation, the Kickers would give everything "until the last month". "We're still trying to get as many points as possible."

After the indisputable 0: 4 against FC St. Pauli, the Würzburg team improved, but they made bad mistakes on the defensive.

Serdar Dursun (45th + 1 minute / hand penalty) put the initially harmless Darmstadt team in the lead with his 19th goal of the season.

Lars Dietz (63.) even scored the equalizer for the brave Kickers.

After a yellow-red card against Rajiv van La Parra (67th), Marvin Pieringer (69th) gave the decimated Würzburg a chance to make it 2-1.

Instead, Tim Skarke (79th) met Felix Platte (90th + 3) after a pathetic attempt to clarify by Tobias Kraulich and seconds before the final whistle.

The Kickers team, which had been changed to five positions from coach Ralf Santelli, played an active role.

However, it showed a major shortcoming this season: On the offensive, the Kickers do not get beyond promising approaches.

And then mistakes happen in defense.

Dietz got the ball in his own penalty area, referee Christof Günsch decided on a penalty for the previously harmless Hessen.

Dursun gave goalkeeper Hendrik Bonmann no chance with his low shot at the bottom right.

With his equalizer, Dietz showed, however, that the Kickers have not yet given up.

And even after van La Parra, the half-brother of Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum, was sent off, the Würzburg team held against it.

But Pieringer missed the huge chance to make it 2-1 from six meters.

Skarke and Platte then punished the home side.
