It has been quite exactly one year since SVT Stockholm visited the same department at Karolinska.

Then, on April 20, 2020, the number of iva patients culminated in Stockholm and was around 230. Today, there are about a hundred patients admitted to iva throughout the county.

The big difference between the spring of 2020 and the spring of 2021 is, according to operations manager Björn Persson, that the staff is extremely worn and that it is difficult to staff.

Then staff from private actors and other departments were added.

It does not do the same today.

- Empty beds are ready to be used here, but we do not have staff to staff with.

It would be much easier if we got help from private care providers, says Björn Persson, operations manager at iva at NKS.

Planned care paused - dialogue with private actors is ongoing

The Stockholm Region has now paused the planned care in the county to free up staff.

There is also a dialogue with private care providers about supporting the emergency hospitals with care assignments that are normally performed at the emergency hospitals, or contributing with trained care staff.

SVT got to follow iva at Karolinska in the middle of the third wave - see the report above.
