Berlin (dpa) - All thoughts of the big European surprise with 1. FC Union are only secondary for veteran Christian Gentner.

"The league is in the bag, that makes the season outstanding", emphasized the experienced professional of the Berlin Bundesliga club before the game against his former club VfB Stuttgart on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky).

Six games before the end of the season, the Iron are in seventh place in the table with 40 points and have further prospects of an international starting position.

But that shouldn't be a burden for Union, Gentner made it clear in a media round on Wednesday: "It's great that we can play out of the situation."

The 35-year-old Gentner emphasized that it was “not necessary at all” to look upwards: “We already know which opponents are still waiting, the absolute top of the league.”

After the strong promoted VfB, who is only one point behind Union, Dortmund, Wolfsburg, Leverkusen and Leipzig from the top third are still waiting.

“It's not like we're getting points for free,” said Gentner.

However, the past few months have shown that Union can also score in games in which few trust the team.

Gentner's personal future is still uncertain.

His contract with Union is running out.

A career end in summer is not planned at the moment.

“Regardless of the end of the season, I would like to continue playing football - especially with spectators again.

There is currently no trend where it will be.

There are no concrete discussions going on, ”said the native Swabian.

Even if he “doesn't worry” about Europe, he always enjoyed the European Cup games with Wolfsburg and Stuttgart.

"The trips, the different cultures and stadiums, the different styles of playing that you get to know", as well as the sometimes less well-known cities and countries in the Europa League, were "totally exciting", emphasized Gentner, who played 51 games on this international stage.

He would wish every player this experience - also at 1. FC Union.
