Munich (dpa) - CSU boss Markus Söder has described the outcome of the power struggle for the candidacy for chancellor in a CSU parliamentary group meeting in the state parliament in Munich as "completely open".

The German Press Agency was unanimously informed by several participants in the meeting on Wednesday.

In the end you have to think about what is best.

You will come to a good result, said Söder accordingly.

However, you should take a few days to answer such an important question.

Söder added that none should be damaged.

He described his opponent, CDU boss Armin Laschet, as a highly veritable Prime Minister, whom he held in high esteem.

According to the participants, Söder said that in the end you had to be able to explain to the people outside why you decided one way or the other.

Decisions in a modern democracy must always be measured by the acceptance of the population.

After the decision, however, there should be no "follow-up discussion", he warned.

After a joint appearance in the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag on Tuesday, Söder and Laschet announced that they wanted to clarify the question of the candidate for chancellor in the coming days.

When and how this should take place remained open on Wednesday.

In front of journalists, Söder said on the sidelines of the CSU parliamentary group meeting: "In the end everything will be fine."

The CSU boss rejected speculation of any kind - everything else is "in the stars".
