Potsdam (dpa / bb) - According to the Ministry of Health, the number of deaths in Brandenburg in connection with Covid has increased significantly in the second corona wave.

Because of the high number of infections from autumn to February, many residents of inpatient care facilities died, said the spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Gabriel Hesse, on request.

According to him, a total of 398 deaths in connection with a Covid disease had been reported from the nursing homes by the end of December (as of December 18, 2020), and in mid-April there were a total of 1,528 (as of April 14, 2021) deaths.

The country had started corona vaccinations in nursing homes at the end of December.

Meanwhile, the majority of residents of fully inpatient care facilities in the country have been vaccinated, said Hesse.

“What we can clearly feel is that the vaccinations in the homes offer good protection”.

The mortality rate in Brandenburg is currently 3.63 percent, nationwide it is 2.59 percent.

Initially, the "Bild" newspaper reported and also consulted the neighboring state of Berlin for comparison, where two percent of people died in connection with Covid.

The simple comparison of the number of deaths between the city-state of Berlin and the area of Brandenburg is not serious, explained Hesse.

In addition to the higher age structure - as repeatedly shown in studies - socio-economic differences played a role.

The previous exposure to diseases such as diabetes or obesity is significantly higher in Brandenburg than in Berlin.
