The situation in healthcare is described as increasingly strained and intensive care is pointed out as particularly affected.

It shows a review that SVT has done of the county administrative boards' status reports.

At the same time, the Government Offices states in its status report that the situation is expected to worsen.

"This poses major challenges for healthcare and contributes to uncertainty regarding future developments," they write.

Serious situation

The Stockholm Region describes that the staff is worn out and that it is difficult to get extra staff.

In Östergötland, it is stated that the staff is exhausted and that the peak has not yet been reached.

In the past week, the number of patients in the intensive care units in Uppsala has reached new record levels.

- We do everything we can to cope with it, that's what we are good at.

But there are always limits, says Rafael Kawati.

Two regions, Uppsala and Östergötland, assess that the situation now has a serious impact on life and health, 12 regions state a significant impact.

Small margins

In total, almost 400 patients with covid-19 are intensively cared for in Sweden, in 16 of 21 regions the number of hospitalizations increased in the last week.

When the situation was at its worst this spring, around 550 patients were cared for in intensive care units around the country.

- I think we have to adjust to the fact that it will be even worse, I am very worried about my members, says Sofia Lindström, intensive care nurse and local chairman of the Care Association Uppsala.

Several regions also report that the high load makes the healthcare system fragile and that margins are small.

The Government Offices' report states that four regions report less than ten percent of IVA capacity.

- We are forced to prioritize hard.

We do not have the same access to care.

It is pandemic care and it is different now, unfortunately, says Sofia Lindström.
