Berlin (dpa) - Former Bonn CDU member of the Bundestag and deputy head of the Chancellor's office, Helmut Kohls, Stephan Eisel, collects supporters for a candidate for chancellor from the CDU chairman in a so-called “Union for Laschet”.

He wanted to make it clear that «the unanimous support for Armin Laschet in the presidium and board of the CDU is not a backroom action, but reflects the opinion of large parts of the membership», Eisel told the Bonn «General-Anzeiger».

He was annoyed that CSU boss Markus Söder wanted to give the wrong impression that Laschet had no support at the base of the Union.

"There is a lot of resentment at the base of the CDU about the tactical games from Munich," said Eisel.

In the first few hours, 83 first-time signatories, some of whom were prominent, joined the campaign, Eisel told the newspaper.

The dpa in Berlin also has the list of initial signatories.

Among them are ex-Federal Family Minister Ursula Lehr, the former Secretary General Ruprecht Polenz, ex-Kohl advisor Horst Teltschik, the former head of the Rhenish CDU, Bernhard Worms, and the chairman of the Central Committee of German Catholics, Thomas Sternberg.

In addition, the list includes numerous ex-CDU mandate holders from Bonn and the region in the European Parliament, Bundestag, Landtag, district assemblies and other municipal parliaments.
