Neubrandenburg / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The district of Mecklenburg Lake District has again greater financial leeway after years under strict ministerial supervision.

As the Schwerin Ministry of the Interior announced on Tuesday, the district has reduced its last old debts and can now decide more freely about investments again.

This is evident from the current data for the 2020 annual financial statements.

The background is the million-dollar debts of the three old districts of Demmin, Müritz and Mecklenburg-Strelitz before the last regional reform in 2011.

That is why the Mecklenburg Lake District, like other municipalities, was subject to provisional budget management for years under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior in Schwerin.

The lake district has an area of 5500 square kilometers and is therefore twice as large as the Saarland.

The ministry also approved the 2021 budget, which includes just under 18 million euros in investments in schools and ailing district roads.

The budget includes expenses and income of 559 million euros.

The district levy, which determines the payments made by the municipalities belonging to the district to the district, is 43.294 percent and is one of the highest in the northeast.
