Berlin (dpa) - The decision on the Union's candidacy for chancellor is likely to be made in the next few days.

CDU boss Armin Laschet and CSU boss Markus Söder want to clarify this week.

"I want us to come to a good decision very quickly, very soon, if possible this week," said Laschet on Tuesday evening after an appearance with Söder in front of the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

Söder explained: "Armin and I have agreed that we will also finally discuss how things will go on this week."

In the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Söder and Laschet had previously had an open exchange of blows.

"We don't need a one-man show," said Laschet, apparently in the direction of Söder, according to information from the German press agency from participants.

He pointed out that elections were personal and that television duels played an important role.

"We need a good team, but top is also crucial."

This could be understood as an indication of his much better survey results.

On Monday, the presidia of the CDU and CSU each had their chairman backed for the candidacy for chancellor.

But Söder insisted on getting a picture of the opinion of the parliamentary group.

According to the participants, there were dozens of requests to speak there on Tuesday - overall more for Söder than for Laschet.

The Bavarian Prime Minister spoke for about twice as long as his NRW colleague, it was said.

The MPs consistently called for the decision to be made quickly.

The CDU member of the Bundestag Roderich Kiesewetter from Baden-Württemberg said in the evening in the ZDF's “heute journal” that there had been an exciting picture of opinions, but not a very clear trend.

The CDU member Norbert Barthle from the same state association, however, said the mood had "clearly reflected" that backing for Laschet comes mainly from his NRW state association, the other state associations, on the other hand, tended to Söder.

CSU General Secretary Markus Blume spoke of a very good, open, honest discussion.

Söder is the one “who is incredibly strong and well received out there,” he said on the ZDF talk show “Markus Lanz”.

The important question is what the Union parties think broadly.

«We want to create a movement.

And we want to deploy the best, ”said Blume.

"The two or three days are well invested."

A majority of German citizens see Söder's application for the Union's candidacy for chancellor as positive.

In a representative survey by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Wednesday), 58 percent of those questioned correctly stated that the Bavarian Prime Minister had declared his willingness to become the Union's candidate for chancellor.

30 percent said that they believe Söder's grip on the top candidate to be wrong.

Twelve percent were undecided.

According to the information in the Union camp, the backing for Söder is particularly large: 86 percent of CDU / CSU supporters welcome Söder's move.

50 percent of the Greens supporters and 47 percent of the SPD voters rate it as positive that the CSU boss wants to run.

Among the FDP supporters there are 45 percent.

Only among the supporters of the left and the AfD is the rejection greater than the approval.
