Imola (AP) - Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel used the break after his disastrous Formula 1 start in Bahrain.

“It was good that we had a little more time between the first two races.

This year's calendar won't always be so forgiving, but that gave us an additional opportunity to look at the dates and understand where we need to improve the AMR21, "said the 33-year-old ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on April 18th ( 3 p.m. / Sky and RTL) in Imola.

Vettel experienced a start of frustration for his new Aston Martin team in Bahrain at the end of March.

After a rear-end collision with Alpine driver Esteban Ocon, a ten-second penalty and an unsuccessful risk tactic, the four-time world champion was only 15th.

"We have a lot that we can improve," said Vettel.

Team boss Otmar Szafnauer is relaxed about the miserable start of his new star driver.

"The car he drives now is completely different from the one he drove before," said Szafnauer.

Vettel had previously driven for Ferrari six years, Aston Martin is powered by a Mercedes engine.

"I'm still confident that we'll get Seb where we want him to be."
