Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Tens of thousands in the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) Saxony-Anhalt unchecked deleted data records on offenders are restored.

"The data recovery took place in close coordination between the State Office of Criminal Investigation in Saxony-Anhalt, the Federal Criminal Police Office, the Ministry of the Interior and Sport and the State Commissioner for Data Protection in Saxony-Anhalt," said the Ministry on request.

There were almost 42,000 records with photos, fingerprints and special features such as tattoos and scars from criminals.

DNA and search data were not affected by the deletion - but the identification service part of the police information system, which was recently transferred back to the federal states by the Federal Criminal Police Office.

In a specific case, all data should be checked for possible deletion or renewal.

The data breach became public at the end of February through a report by the Magdeburg Volksstimme.

Now 23,619 cases - several data records can belong to a criminal - have been checked individually by hand in the police authorities of the state police, the Ministry of the Interior in Magdeburg said.

The result: 923 cases were deleted because certain deadlines had expired.

The database is retained in 22,696 cases.

The police could use this data again for the identification measures since March 26th.

Regarding the consequences of the data breach, the ministry said that a group of five is now checking the criminal records in the police authorities.

They look at how the criminal files are kept in the state police and how they are sorted out.

The final report of the business audit group should be awaited.
