The month of Ramadan, which takes place once again in the particular context linked to the pandemic, begins Tuesday in France.

"We can fast in accordance with the teachings of Islam, while respecting the sanitary rules", assures Tareq Oubrou, the imam of Bordeaux, guest of Europe 1 Tuesday morning.

INTERVIEW

Many Muslims in France and around the world begin the fasting month of Ramadan on Tuesday, darkened for the second year in a row by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Religious authorities strongly advise against grouping beyond the home or among neighbors at the time of "iftar", the daily fast-breaking meal.

Due to the curfew and the closing of places of worship at 7 p.m., there will also be no night prayers in mosques.

"I call on Muslims here to respect sanitary rules", proclaims Tareq Oubrou, imam of the Bordeaux mosque, guest of Europe 1 Tuesday.

During Ramadan, believers are urged to refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and having sex from dawn until sunset.

For the imam of Bordeaux, "the spirit of fasting is not affected by the pandemic".

"We can totally fast in accordance with the teachings of Islam, while respecting the health rules that apply to all," says the imam.

"We adapt", assures the imam

The daily breaking of the fast is usually a social, convivial or even festive component of this month.

But these are not "religious obligations", reminds Tareq Oubrou, who adds: "The fast of the month of Ramadan should not be an alibi to break free from the rules which are imposed on all citizens. "

Same logic for night prayer.

"It is not an obligation but an optional practice. That cannot be accomplished this year in the mosque, since there is a curfew."

Ramadan is also a month of solidarity and charity actions for people in need.

"We adapt. The donation is not affected as such, on the contrary, more than ever we need to give to others. The Covid crisis has affected many people who are today isolated, students including. A lot of people need help. "
