Munich (dpa / lby) - Almost half a year after the introduction of subsidies for fertility treatments, the Free State has approved around 2,700 applications from couples with an unfulfilled desire to have children.

“With the funding program, we have taken an important step towards facilitating access to fertility treatments.

The funding is very popular, ”said Family Minister Carolina Trautner (CSU) when asked.

Since the start of funding on November 1, 2020, around 3,300 applications have been submitted in Bavaria.

The Ministry of Family Affairs estimates that almost every tenth couple in Germany between the ages of 25 and 59 are involuntarily childless.

Funding can be applied for online on the website of the Bavarian Family and Social Center.

The treatment may also be carried out in an adjacent federal state.

Married couples and unmarried heterosexual couples with a common main residence in Bavaria are eligible.

Homosexual couples have so far not been entitled to subsidies for fertility treatments.

According to the ministry, this requirement results on the one hand from a federal funding guideline and on the other hand is stipulated in the federal law on statutory health insurance (Section 27a SGB V), according to which only the couple's egg and sperm cells may be used in treatment.
