Blankenfelde-Mahlow (dpa / bb) - In the municipality of Blankenfelde-Mahlow (Teltow-Fläming district), construction work has begun on a new rail section to the capital city airport BER.

This means that the airport express from Berlin Central Station will only need 20 minutes to Terminal 1 of the airport from 2025, as Deutsche Bahn announced on Tuesday.

That would be another eight minutes faster than now.

The federal and state governments are investing 62 million euros in the construction of the new section.

This is a "further big step for a faster and environmentally friendly rail connection between the most important traffic points in the region," said the Federal Railways Commissioner, Enak Ferlemann, at the groundbreaking on Tuesday.
