United States: Joe Biden hosts summit on global semiconductor shortage

Many sectors have been struggling for several months to source semiconductors.

For months, in fact, whole sections of the world industry have encountered difficulties in sourcing semiconductors.

Biden administration's stated goal: to strengthen semiconductor manufacturing in the United States.

CEOs of nineteen American groups or established in the United States are invited to the virtual meeting organized by the White House.

Among them: Alphabet, parent company of Google, Intel and automotive giants like Ford, General Motors and TSMC.

Across the table is the director of the National Economic Council, as well as national security and trade officials.

Sign of the importance that Washington attaches to this shortage of semiconductors.  

Taiwanese and Korean main suppliers

It is the Taiwanese and Koreans who have become the main suppliers of these tiny components, which are essential for the manufacture of smartphones, computers and even car dashboards.

But these major players have been facing an explosion in global demand for several months. 

Reduce dependence on Asia

The US administration wants to reduce its dependence on Asia by strengthening the capacities of semiconductor supply chains on its soil.

President Joe Biden presented a comprehensive infrastructure and energy investment plan at the end of March, a plan supposed to create well-paying jobs.

Semiconductor manufacturing in the United States is one of them.
