Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Canceled folk festivals and forbidden celebrations: Many showmen in Rhineland-Palatinate are suffering from the Corona crisis.

“The situation is very difficult for the showmen,” said Georg Spreuer, Chairman of the Showmen's Association Rheinhessen, when asked by the German Press Agency: “There is no perspective for our profession.

At the moment we live on hope. "

The financial situation has been critical for over a year, said Spreuer.

Everyone is trying to get by in some way.

"We all play for time."

According to its own information, the Showman Association Rheinhessen represents the interests of around 50 companies in Rheinhessen and Mainz.

The showmen in Rhineland-Palatinate are usually out and about at around 30 festivals and markets a year - from a one-day city festival to a Christmas market lasting several weeks.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of events has fallen to almost zero.

"I would like a perspective from politics," said Spreuer.

“The showman's concepts are there.

We want to bring joy to people again and live from the work we do. "

Spreuer also appealed to the organizers of parties.

"You should drive on sight and not cancel folk festivals in autumn now."

The showmen could also set up a folk festival in a very short time.

"At the moment we have time for that too."
