Berlin (dpa) - With the open power struggle for the candidacy for chancellor between the CDU chairman Armin Laschet and CSU boss Markus Söder, the union has come under enormous pressure.

Laschet wants to secure the support of the party leadership this morning in the CDU presidium and board.

He will “ask for trust”, said the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister in the ARD program “Report from Berlin”.

"And the party will then make a recommendation."

According to his words, there should not be a decision in the Presidium.

"A picture of opinion is obtained," explained Laschet in the "Bild live" talk "The right questions".

When asked whether he was counting on a majority for his candidacy, he said: "I'm assuming that, but we'll see that tomorrow."

The CSU presidium also wants to meet in the afternoon.

Söder had made his claim to the candidacy for chancellor on Sunday dependent on broad support from the CDU in a joint appearance with Laschet in front of the Union faction board.

The Bavarian Prime Minister promised that otherwise he would classify himself and work with Laschet without resentment.

If the CDU bodies should support Laschet with a very large majority, that would be a big plus for the 60-year-old from Aachen.

If not, a difficult phase looms.

Söder, who had held on to a decision for a long time until Pentecost, made it clear that it has to be much faster - but also that, from his point of view, the decision does not necessarily have to be made this Monday.

The CDU and CSU should have decided in “at the latest” ten days, he said on Sunday evening on ZDF.

"I think it is even possible this week to make a joint decision."

Laschet, on the other hand, urges a very quick decision.

In any case, the Union cannot afford a hangover in view of falling polls.

You have to take a quick and solid footing: Because it is not even six months until the general election on September 26th, and after the SPD, the Greens, who are already strong in the polls, want to announce a candidate for chancellor for the first time on Monday next week.

From a confrontation between the Union sisters to a formal vote, for example in the joint parliamentary group, is also discouraged in the CSU.

"I do not expect a candidate for a fight in the Union parliamentary group, that would be a cornerstone that would make the federal election campaign unnecessarily difficult," said the CSU European politician Markus Ferber of the "Augsburger Allgemeine".

Söder also emphasized that both applicants would have to appear united even after the decision: "One thing is clear, the two party leaders must ultimately work closely together even after this personal decision."

He promised to do it in turn.

Laschet and Söder had competed with each other for months without, however, officially claiming the candidacy for chancellor.

Laschet had never left any doubts about his goal, however, Söder had repeatedly said that his place was in Bavaria.

On Sunday they both raised the right to stand for candidacy at the parliamentary group's executive committee meeting.

The former vice parliamentary group leader Wolfgang Bosbach warned Laschet to keep an eye on the Union's election opportunities.

«Now it's primarily up to Armin Laschet.

If he really wants to be a candidate for chancellor, then I don't think Markus Söder is looking for an open power struggle with the CDU boss.

If it is crucial for Armin Laschet with whom the Union has the better chances in September, he will propose Markus Söder himself, ”said Bosbach of the“ Heilbronner Voice ”.

The SPD accused the Union of obstructing government work.

«The leadership vacuum has not made it easier for us to govern together.

The two chairmen of the CDU and CSU should finally stop the show, ”said her parliamentary director Carsten Schneider the news portal t-online.
