Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Even at the beginning of the year, there was no sign of a corona-related wave of insolvency in Hesse.

The number of corporate insolvencies in January was well below the previous year's level, the State Statistical Office announced on Monday in Wiesbaden.

The preliminary figures for February were also below the values for the same month last year.

The downward trend from the second half of 2020 thus continued.

However, companies that are still pending the payment of the state aid planned since November were exempt from filing for bankruptcy.

In January, 81 corporate insolvencies were filed in Hesse.

That is a decrease of 23 percent compared to the same period in the previous year, when 105 applications had been reported.

Of the bankruptcies applied for, 44 proceedings were opened - 37 were dismissed because the debtors' assets would probably not have been sufficient to cover the costs of the insolvency proceedings.

And while 107 insolvency proceedings were filed in February before the Corona crisis, the provisional number for February 2021 is 84.

The state office recorded a 27 percent decline in consumer bankruptcies in January compared to the same month last year.
