Köthen (dpa / sa) - In order to create space for renovation work, the historic Naumann collection has been moving from Köthen Castle (Anhalt-Bitterfeld district) to interim quarters since this Monday.

The castle administration announced that books, files and furniture would be packed first.

The 113 showcases of the bird collection should follow by the end of the month.

However, the exhibits at the temporary location are not accessible to visitors.

To compensate for this, events such as a reading series and other exhibitions are planned.

The Naumann Museum has been closed for six months.

The planned completion of the work is currently at the end of 2022. The roof and load-bearing walls are to be renovated.

For this purpose, the leading Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation has been provided with 248,000 euros by the federal government from the program for “Nationally important cultural monuments”.

A total of 950,000 euros would be available for the two planned construction phases.

Around 1300 stuffed bird species have been exhibited in Köthen Castle since 1835.

Thanks to the use of airtight display cases, the preparations have been preserved to this day.

This was done at the instruction of the farmer and ornithologist Johann Friedrich Naumann (1780-1857), who collected the pieces over the years for his thirteen-volume main work "Natural History of the Birds of Germany".
