Berlin (dpa) - After the CDU presidium had decided on party leader Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor, the Union's offspring voted for a quick decision together with the CSU.

The chairman of the Junge Union (JU), Tilman Kuban, said after information from participants in the online deliberations of the CDU board on Monday: "We should give Armin Laschet a strong negotiating mandate today and be closed."

It now needs a quick decision with the CSU about the candidacy for chancellor.

Previously, the CDU presidium, the closest leadership circle around Laschet, had unanimously supported his ambitions for the Union's candidacy for chancellor.

The Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier said after the meeting that the CDU Presidium had supported Laschet without exception.

But no decision was made - this was not planned either.

The idea of the CDU top is to get a joint solution with the CSU within a week.
