Guillermo Lasso is the new president of Ecuador

.

Businessman, banker, in his third attempt as Ecuadorian presidential candidate, the 65-year-old will take over from the outgoing Lenin Moreno.

Representative of Creo, allied with the Social Christian party, Lasso managed in the ballot to counter the advance of the progressive Andrés Arauz (Unes) by drawing to himself a large number of votes that until two months ago belonged to other candidates vying for the presidency .

The poll certified an unequivocal vote:

Lasso got 52.48%

, while Arauz, who probably served the legacy of former president Rafael Correa, stopped at 47.52%.

A reversal of the first electoral round.

"Democracy has triumphed.

This is a historic day, it is a day in which all Ecuadorians have decided their future

. I thank them for their trust", is the first message to the people of Lasso.

He was congratulated by the presidents of Uruguay and Colombia, Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou and Iván Duque Márquez and the former president of Argentina Mauricio Macri.

Lasso will continue towards a liberal policy, already announced: "A new course very different from that of the last 14 years in Ecuador. From May 24 we will take on the challenge of changing the fate of our homeland and realizing the opportunities and prosperity in Ecuador in we all yearn for. "

Its administration will have to deal with the numbers, considering that at the unicameral congress of 137 members it will have 31 seats.

Arauz will have 49 parliamentarians and for this reason Lasso will be forced to negotiate every initiative with the other parties: starting with Pachakutik by candidate Yaku Pérez (27 seats) to Izquierda Democrática by Marcelo Xavier Hervas Mora (18), and with 12 parliamentarians from other minor formations.
