Kiel (dpa / lno) - In the debate about the Union's candidacy for chancellor, Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther expressed a clear preference for CDU leader Armin Laschet.

With Laschet and the CSU chairman Markus Söder, the Union has two highly suitable applicants, said Günther on Monday in Kiel.

Like the presidium and the federal executive board of the CDU as a whole, he also emphatically supported Laschet's candidacy.

He supports Laschet, “because I think he is the right candidate, even in these times - someone who stands for Europe like no other, someone who can balance things, who can bring opinions together, but who has also shown that as Prime Minister has responsibility he can successfully lead a coalition that is able to show leadership at all in these times, ”said Günther.

"That's why I support the candidacy."

Despite lower polls for the CDU, Günther was confident for the federal election on September 26th: "My prognosis is definitely that the next chancellor will be the candidate of the Union."

It is also clear that no decision on the candidacy for chancellor had yet been made on Monday.

Now it is important that the upcoming conversation between Söder and Laschet take place as soon as possible.

"The general election is soon," said Günther, who is also the state chairman of the North CDU.

That is why it is right to clarify quickly.

There is great sympathy for both candidates in the CDU, said Günther.

"I consider Markus Söder to be an excellent Prime Minister and also a good top candidate without a doubt - despite all that, I have a clear preference for it."

Laschet and Söder had declared their willingness to run for office at the weekend.

Günther has repeatedly expressed himself positively about Laschet in the past, but always considered the possibility of a CSU chancellor candidate.

Before Günther's statement, the governing bodies of the federal CDU, presidium and board, had given Laschet full support in the dispute with Söder.

The decision on the Union's candidacy for chancellor should not be made until the end of the week, according to the will of the CSU boss.

Söder made his candidacy on Sunday in a joint appearance with Laschet in front of the head of the Union faction dependent on broad support from the CDU.

The Bavarian Prime Minister promised that otherwise he would classify himself and work with Laschet without resentment.

He has no doubt that the word of the Bavarian Prime Minister also counts here, said Günther.

The lower polls for the CDU had a lot to do with corona management at the federal level.

He has no doubt that the polls for Laschet will also improve.

"And in the end the election result counts, too, and I am very convinced that we have every chance with it," said the Kiel head of government.
