03 July 2017 Eight people were injured following a shooting outside a mosque in Avignon, France.

At first it was feared that it was a replica of what has already happened in Canada and recently also in Great Britain: a deliberate attack, of Islamophobic origin, against Muslim faithful gathered in prayer.

But then the investigations seem to have taken another path, that of a quarrel between young people or a settlement of scores between gangs.

Hooded men aboard a Clio

According to an initial reconstruction, some armed men opened fire last night around 10:30 pm.

According to local media reports, the shooting took place in front of the Arrahma mosque in Rue Barcelona, in the Grange d'Orel district of Avignon.

According to some testimonies, confirmed by the police, two hooded men arrived aboard a Renault Clio.

One had a pistol, the other a rifle.

People inside the mosque fled immediately after the two started shooting.

among the injured there is also a 7-year-old girl.

Magistrate: settling of scores or quarrels between young people

The police have ruled out the terrorist matrix of what happened.

The magistrate in charge, Laure Chabaud, speculated that a settling of scores or a quarrel between young people could have caused the shooting.

"From what we know - local media report citing investigators -, the events took place in the street that runs alongside the mosque, but are not connected to it".
