Wolfsburg / Hanover (dpa) - The collective bargaining talks at Volkswagen entered the fifth round on Monday.

According to IG Metall, representatives of the employer and the union withdrew to further negotiations in the afternoon.

The pressure for a conclusion as soon as possible had recently increased after a result for the companies in the metal area was agreed on Friday in the VW home state of Lower Saxony after lengthy consultations.

Warning strikes had previously taken place both there and at several locations of the largest European car manufacturer.

We are looking for a new degree for the more than 120,000 collective bargaining employees of VW in the six West German plants.

The company offered a one-off payment of 250 euros in the first half of 2021 and a table-effective pay increase of 1.2 percent in the coming year.

In addition, instead of the previous performance component, employees are to receive a “standard special payment” of 1,800 euros per year.

IG Metall rejected this as inadequate.

Your district chief in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, Thorsten Gröger, said before the start of the fifth round that the metal area closure had "shown that it is possible to find good and future-oriented solutions even in difficult times".

But this could not be a “one-to-one blueprint” for the car manufacturer - in addition to the demand for four percent more money - due to other points.

IG Metall at VW is also demanding expanded options for converting working hours and apprenticeship commitments.

Gröger declared that he was now hoping for "a decent, fair offer".
