Berlin (dpa) - The CDU chairman Armin Laschet has received full support in the governing bodies of his party for his intended candidate for chancellor.

"There is widespread support for Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor from the CDU and CSU," said CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak on Monday after deliberations by the Presidium and the Federal Board.

"The opinion in the Presidium as well as in the Federal Board is clear."

It's about the ability to lead, but also about the ability to bring together and lead a team.

It is about modernizing the country and integrating society as a whole, emphasized Ziemiak.

"According to the unanimous view of the requests to speak that we have seen today, all of this is best embodied by Armin Laschet."

Laschet said that he would seek a conversation today with the CSU chairman Markus Söder, who is also available for the candidacy for chancellor.

"Everyone wants a quick decision."

He was very happy about the great support in the CDU committees.

"That wasn't a preliminary decision today, it was an opinion of the CDU and its 15 regional associations," Laschet emphasized.
