A large majority of the CDU presidium supported a candidate for chancellor by party leader Armin Laschet.

This was confirmed by the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier on Monday after a meeting of the Presidium in Berlin.

But no decision was made - this was also not planned.

The Berlin CDU had previously signaled its support for CSU leader Markus Söder as the Union's candidate for chancellor.

The presidium of the capital city CDU unanimously voted for a candidacy for the Bavarian Prime Minister, said the CDU state chairman Kai Wegner.

"Markus Söder is the hands-on, successful crisis manager who can lead Germany out of the pandemic and make the country fit for the future," explained Wegner.

With Armin Laschet and Söder, the Union has two strong Prime Ministers as chairmen of the CDU and CSU, who both have what it takes to be Federal Chancellor, Wegner said, but also said: “We are convinced that people even more trust Markus Söder to do Germany well to lead."

The CDU presidium met on Monday to deliberate on the Union's candidacy for chancellor.

A telephone conference of the closest leadership of the CDU and CSU with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), which takes place every Monday morning, was canceled according to WELT information.

It was expected that the CDU presidium would give Laschet backing.

"It is clear that the CDU Presidium is behind its party chairman," Saarland's Prime Minister Tobias Hans said before the meeting began.

But that is not the question at all.

“We are discussing how to approach the question of the candidate for chancellor and how we can use the opportunities for our country in the 1920s.

It's about the country above all. "

On Sunday, both Laschet and Söder had declared their readiness to run as candidate for chancellor of the Union.

Söder made this dependent on the support of the CSU.

The Presidium, the closest leadership circle around Laschet, met for the first time in months.

Laschet wanted to secure the support of the management bodies there and later on the board.

He would “ask for trust”, he said on Sunday evening on ARD.

The party will then make a recommendation.

There should be no decision.

In addition to the CDU executive committee, the CSU presidium also deliberates on Monday afternoon.

CDU boss Armin Laschet wants to answer questions from the media around 1.30 p.m. in Berlin.

CSU boss Söder is planning a press conference in Munich for 4.30 p.m.
