Munich (dpa) - According to Secretary General Markus Blume, the CSU Presidium has unanimously voted in favor of party leader Markus Söder as the Union's candidate for chancellor.

There is now a recommendation from the CDU leadership for Armin Laschet, a recommendation from the CSU for Söder - and there is a "clear majority opinion" in the German population, said Blume on Monday after a switch from the CSU presidium in Munich.

The CSU leadership is convinced that Söder is the most suitable candidate for the tasks ahead.

It is not about quick decisions now, it is about right decisions, said Blume.

You are now at the beginning of the consultation, not endlessly, but “open-ended”, he emphasized.

The basis must be listened to, the decision must be broadly based.

A member survey, as demanded by the parliamentary group leader Thomas Kreuzer, was “not the position of the CSU presidium”.
