London (AP) - The American film "Nomadland" by the Chinese director Chloé Zhao is the winner of the evening with four awards at the British film awards known as Baftas.

The road movie, which is also a favorite at the Oscars in two weeks' time, won the award for best film at the awards ceremony in London's Royal Albert Hall on Sunday.

Zhao received the Bafta for best director, Frances McDormand was awarded for best leading actress.

“Nomadland” also received the camera award.

Further winners in two important categories were the drama “The Father” by director Florian Zeller and the thriller comedy “Promising Young Woman” by director Emerald Fennell.

Anthony Hopkins was named Best Actor for "The Father".

In addition, the film received the Bafta for the best adapted screenplay, while “Promising Young Woman” received Bafta trophies for the best original screenplay and as an outstanding British film.

The award for the best non-English-language film went to the satire “Der Rausch” by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg.

The Bafta for the best animated film went to “Soul” by Disney and Pixar, which was also awarded for its film music.

The South Korean Yuh-Jung Youn received the award for best supporting actress for her role in the drama "Minari".

In the men's category, Daniel Kaluuya was honored for “Judas And The Black Messiah”.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Bafta ceremony recorded before the TV broadcast took place in the Royal Albert Hall without an audience.

Prize winners were connected via video.

For once, after the death of his grandfather Prince Philip, Bafta President Prince William did not give a speech.

From 1959 to 1965 Philip was himself President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
