The deputy CDU federal chairman Thomas Strobl assumes that the bodies of his party will come to a vote on the Union's candidacy for chancellor on Monday.

"The Presidium and the Federal Board are now the right place to discuss and decide the position of the CDU on the candidacy for chancellor," said the Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister of the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" (Monday editions).

In the ARD program “Report from Berlin”, the CDU chairman Armin Laschet announced that he would be promoting his candidacy in the governing bodies on Monday.

"Tomorrow I will be ready to run, like Markus Söder, and ask for your trust," said North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister.

He added: "And the party will then make a recommendation."

Laschet said on ZDF that it had been agreed with Söder that there should be no decision there.

He added, however, that they will “certainly get an opinion on the position of the CDU and then give recommendations for the further way”.

CSU boss Söder said on Sunday evening that he had “actually” agreed in a conversation with Laschet that “there will be no decision-making now”.

On Monday morning, the presidia of the CDU and CSU will hold separate meetings to discuss the competing claims of their party leaders.

Laschet and Söder had declared their willingness to accept the Union's candidacy for chancellor for the first time on Sunday.

While the leadership of the CDU already meets in the morning from 9 a.m. for a regular meeting, Söder wants to convene the presidium of the CSU for the early evening.

The CDU Presidium will meet in attendance for the first time in a long time.
