Konstanz (dpa / lsw) - Martin Hahn, member of the Green State Parliament, has called for more financial support for orchards.

The state subsidy for orchards should be expanded, said Hahn to the "Südkurier" (Saturday) in Constance.

"We need more offers."

Agriculture Minister Peter Hauk (CDU) was also open to new support options, according to the newspaper.

In 1965 there were still around 18 million orchards in Baden-Württemberg, as the paper reported, citing the ministry.

Last year there were only a good seven million - a decrease of a good 60 percent.

With around 89,000 hectares, however, there are the most important contiguous orchards in Central Europe in the southwest.

“The area around Stuttgart and Pforzheim as well as parts of the Upper Swabian region are considered to be the core areas of orchards.

Also on Lake Constance, in addition to espalier fruit plantations, there are large areas with so-called standard trees. "

The situation is "really very worrying," said Hahn.

The importance of the orchards for biodiversity and the landscape is enormous.

Markus Rösler from the Nabu Nature Conservation Union sees the stock as “acutely endangered”.

"We urgently need professional initiatives for the marketing of standard fruit," he told the "Südkurier".

When buying a bottle of apple juice, consumers should immediately notice that they are supporting the local cultural landscape.

One problem is that orchards yield significantly less income than intensively cultivated areas.
