Essen (AP) - The former parliamentary group leader Sahra Wagenknecht (51) wants to run again as the top candidate of the left in North Rhine-Westphalia in the federal elections.

At the assembly meeting of the regional association of the left in Essen on Saturday, Wagenknecht has an opposing candidate.

Angela Bankert, who is based in Cologne, is also applying for first place on the state list.

In the past few weeks, your candidacy was hardly promising.

Passages from Wagenknecht's new book that were published ahead of time caused outrage in parts of the party shortly before the date.

As the "Spiegel" reported on Friday, citing members of the party executive, several left-wing politicians called on Wagenknecht to renounce their Bundestag candidacy.

The book with the title “The Self-Righteous”, which is due to appear officially next Wednesday, is seen by the critics as a kind of general accounting for Wagenknecht with his own party.

Wagenknecht fought against the criticism of her book on Friday.

She rated the early publication of individual passages as a targeted maneuver against the Bundestag candidacy she was aiming for.

"To convey a completely distorted picture of the content of my book with quotes that have been taken out of context, in some cases falsified, in order to prevent my reinstatement, is not good dealings with each other," said Wagenknecht.

She wants - contrary to what her opponents demand - to continue running as a candidate in North Rhine-Westphalia.

At the assembly meeting of the NRW-Linke for the federal election on September 26th, the delegates are connected and also vote online.

A decentralized ballot box election will follow on Sunday to confirm the results.

Wagenknecht led the parliamentary group from 2015 to 2019 with Dietmar Bartsch.

Twelve left-wing MPs from North Rhine-Westphalia sit in the Bundestag.

The left is not in the NRW state parliament.
