Munich (dpa / lby) - The Bavarian state parliament is facing one of the largest renovation projects in recent history.

In the coming years, a new visitor foyer is to be built in the venerable Maximilianeum, and extensive renovations and conversions are also planned in the basement.

"Everything happens in the ongoing parliamentary operation, that is a great challenge," said the President of the State Parliament Ilse Aigner (CSU) on Friday in Munich.

According to the plan, the new visitor foyer including security gate should be able to be used from late summer 2023.

Due to the corona pandemic, visits to the state parliament are currently not possible; the parliament normally has around 60,000 visitors a year.

The construction work will take a total of ten years and have a total volume of around 100 million euros, 65 million euros alone were earmarked for the renovation of the basement floors.

Among other things, this involves energy-efficient renovation and modern fire protection.

Work on the visitor foyer should start as early as the coming week.

After the construction work is completed in 2027, the outside area in front of the magnificent west facade will also be redesigned, where a level access and a new fountain with seating will be created.

As planned in the original plans by the architect Friedrich Bürklein, the area should then be accessible to all citizens as a public space, Aigner emphasized.
