After a fateful encounter on a footpath, a 22-year-old has had to answer before the Kiel district court since Friday.

In the course of mutual provocations on August 12, 2020, the man is said to have stabbed a 24-year-old three times from behind and seriously injured him.

The charge is attempted manslaughter.

The injured party said he was in hospital for weeks and is still suffering from the consequences of the knife attack.

It is unclear whether he can fully practice his profession as a trained roofer and craftsman for interior fittings, said the man, visibly concerned in court.

He loves his job.

"Never, never did I want to hit him in the neck"

Neither he nor the accused had clear memories of the exact course of events.

The defendant admitted the knife attack.

But he doesn't know how often he stabbed.

The 22-year-old said he wanted to rush to the aid of his buddy, whom the injured party had previously brought to the ground with one blow.

He feared "it might make him cold" and wanted to "incapacitate the 24-year-old".

"Never, never did I want to hit him in the neck," he said.

Turning directly to the 24-year-old, he apologized: “I am very sorry.

I overreacted shit. "

According to him, he and his buddy were, as usual, under the massive influence of drugs and alcohol when they encountered the couple, pushing a fully loaded shopping cart in front of them.

There were initially provocative looks and words before there was a push and the blow.

The 24-year-old also only had sketchy memories.

The sidewalk wasn't that wide, he said.

He wanted to come by properly with his partner.

Then one provocative word resulted in the other.

All he remembered was that he struck.

"After that I tore the film and woke up again in the hospital." One of the three stitches just barely missed his carotid artery.

The jury has set four trial days.

The verdict is expected on April 19th.

In the event of a guilty verdict, the defendant faces imprisonment as well as detention.

"Maybe I can get the corner there," he said.
