Frankfurt (Oder) - Corona vaccination centers in Brandenburg are to be better equipped for people with disabilities.

From next week, according to the Ministry of Health, digital interpreters will be used in all 13 centers to make communication easier for deaf people.

During a visit to the vaccination center in Frankfurt (Oder), the state's disability officer, Janny Armbruster, presented this new, digital interpreter support on Friday.

The vaccination centers have received tablets for this, which are made available to deaf people at their vaccination appointment.

They are connected directly to a sign language interpreter via video switch, via whom they can then communicate with the staff at the vaccination center.

Armbruster pointed out that people with disabilities were exposed to particular stresses in the corona pandemic.

“Many people with disabilities have a significantly higher risk of a severe course of Covid 19 disease.

A smooth vaccination process - from the appointment to the vaccination - is therefore particularly important for them, ”emphasized Armbruster.

During her visit she was accompanied by four people with different disabilities.

A wheelchair user, a blind person, a hearing impaired person and a deaf person tested the accessibility of the entire vaccination process.

According to the Brandenburg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVBB), all 13 vaccination centers in the state meet the high requirements placed on accessibility.

Criteria include wheelchair-accessible access to all rooms, signs in Braille for the blind, as well as sign language interpreters and other communication aids for people with hearing impairments.

Armbruster campaigned for people with disabilities or serious pre-existing illnesses to be given priority in the vaccination strategy.

In many cases, these groups are not included in the coronavirus vaccination ordinance because their diagnoses are too rare to be statistically significant.
