Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - The Nuremberg SPD elects a new top one year after the lost mayor election.

The Bundestag member Gabriela Heinrich and the city councilor Nasser Ahmed are applying for the party chairmanship in the second largest city in Bavaria.

At the digital annual general meeting on Saturday (10:00 a.m.), 200 voting delegates will decide who should lead the Social Democrats in the former SPD stronghold of Nuremberg.

57-year-old Heinrich has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013.

The 32-year-old Ahmed has been a city councilor in Nuremberg since 2014 with a focus on traffic and sports.

The election is considered to be trend-setting after the end of the era of SPD Mayor Ulrich Maly.

He had not run for another term in the past year.

Instead, the Nuremberg SPD boss Thorsten Brehm entered the race and lost to today's Lord Mayor Marcus König from the CSU.

Brehm then declared that he would give up the SPD party chairmanship.

The two candidates for Brehm's successor at the top of the Nuremberg SPD are both deputy party leaders.

While Heinrich is more of a party establishment, according to a number of party members, Ahmed could represent the dawn of a new era.
