Bremerhaven / Hamburg (dpa / lno) - After almost four weeks in the shipyard, the Hamburg museum ship "Cap San Diego" is returning to the Hanseatic city today, completely overhauled and with a fresh ship inspection.

The almost 60-year-old landmark was moored at the Bredo Dry Docks shipyard in Bremerhaven in mid-March and was subjected to the so-called class, a kind of ship inspection, which is due every five years in the dry dock.

Half of the costs of around 1.4 million euros were borne by the federal government and the Hamburg Admiralty Foundation as the ship owner.

The "Cap San Diego" was put into service in 1962 and went to South America for the Hamburg Süd shipping company.

It has served as a museum and hotel since 2003, but it is still seaworthy and travels several times a year from its berth at the Überseebrücke with up to 500 passengers to the North or Baltic Sea.

Due to the corona pandemic, the ship cannot currently be viewed.
