The number of charging stations for electric vehicles in North Rhine-Westphalia has increased significantly since the end of 2019.

In February of this year there were a total of 6164 charging points in the most populous federal state, as the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW) announced on Friday.

Compared to December 2019, this means an increase of almost 60 percent.

Nationwide, the number of public charging points for electric cars rose by 66 percent to around 40,000 in the same period.

"The expansion of the public charging infrastructure continues to pick up speed," emphasized Kerstin Andreae, chairwoman of the BDEW management board.

According to the BDEW charging station register, the largest network of charging stations was in Bavaria in February with 8,325 charging points.

In second place was Baden-Württemberg with 7047 charging points, followed by NRW.

In the city ranking of the BDEW, Berlin secured first place with 1694 charging stations, followed by Munich and Hamburg.

Only in sixth place followed with Essen, the first city from North Rhine-Westphalia.

According to the BDEW charging station register, as of February 23, 2021, the Ruhr area city had 398 charging points for electric cars.

Cologne also made it into the top ten in tenth place with 260 charging points.
