Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Left in Berlin has demanded an immediate stop of the construction work on the Autobahn 100 between the Neukölln triangle and the junction in Treptow.

The party rejected the construction of this section and also reject the 17th construction phase through Friedrichshain to Lichtenberg, announced the Berlin state chairwoman, Katina Schubert, on Friday.

"All currently ongoing infrastructure measures to complete the A100 at Treptower Park should be stopped immediately, construction needs to be stopped immediately," said the Left Chairwoman.

"We want to check whether the 16th construction phase, which is already under construction, can be converted into a city street with a cycle expressway."

The Berlin Left will also do everything to ensure that the next construction phase is deleted from the Federal Highway Act without replacement and that no planning approval procedure is opened against the will of the State of Berlin, said Schubert.

Red-Red-Green had agreed in the coalition agreement not to carry out any planning preparations for the 17th construction phase during this legislative period.

According to the text of the contract, the 16th construction phase should be completed at Treptower Park.

The green top candidate for the House of Representatives election, Bettina Jarasch, caused a stir in March with her criticism of the A100.

She had spoken out in favor of the dismantling of the A100 on the section up to Treptower Park and, not least, provoked criticism from the Berlin economy with her statements.

Work on the 16th construction phase, an approximately three-kilometer-long section of the A100, began in 2013. According to the motorway company from mid-March, traffic is expected to be released after the current construction process at the end of 2024.

A bicycle demo is planned for Saturday afternoon from Hermannplatz in Neukölln to the Federal Ministry of Transport against the further construction of the A100.

The left supports the protest.
